تُعد دبابات Challenger – 2 التي تشكّل أساسا القوات المدرعة في الجيش البريطاني من أسوأ دبابات الجيل الثالث.وكانت تلك الدبابات تشغل على مدى اعوام مكانات أخيرة في مختلف مناقصات شراء المعدات الحربية. ومن غير المستغرب أن يكون الجيش الملكي العماني وحده اشترى 38 دبابة من هذا النوع. أما بقية جيوش العالم فرفضت شراءها لوزنها الكبير ومواصفاتها المتواضعة وقابليتها غير الكافية للمناورة.بدأ الإنتاج الصناعي لـChallenger – 2 في بريطانيا في النصف الأول للتسعينيات، وذلك بعد أن حلت محل دبابات Challenger –1 التي لم تستخدم طويلا في الجيش البريطاني. وتميزت النسخة الجديدة لـ Challenger بأجهزة وقاية أفضل ونظام مطوّر لقيادة النيران. وتم تزويدها بمدفع عيار 120 ملم يختلف عن الأعيرة المستخدمة في جيوش الناتو.وعلى الرغم من أن وزنها زاد عن 62000 كلغ يولد محركها قوة 1200 حصان فقط، ما يقل مثلا عن قوة محرك توربين يعود لدبابة "تي – 80 أو" بوزن 46 طنا ويولد 1250 حصانا. ولم تفق سرعتها على الطريق المعبدة 58 كلم/ساعة على الرغم من أن مثيلاتها تتسارع حتى 70 كلم/ساعة.ولا تزيد سماكة دروعها الأمامية عن 100 ملم، ويمكن خرقها بسهولة بواسطة قنابل يدوية نفاثة وصواريخ قديمة مضادة للدبابات. وقد حاول المهندسون تطوير دروعها الأمامية وزوّدوها بأجهزة الحماية الدينامية، ما زاد من وزن الدبابة حتى 75 طنا وفرض قيودا على استخدامها قتالياً وعلى وجه الخصوص في منطقة دونباس.وكانت وسائل الإعلام فد أفادت في وقت سابق بأن البريطانيين قرروا إبقاء 148 دبابة Challenger – 2 فقط في قواتهم البرية. ويتوقع أن يرسل جزء من الدبابات غير المستخدمة إلى أوكرانيا.

A major upgrade of the British Army’s main battle tank featuring extra fire-power and cutting edge protection systems will ensure the UK remains at the forefront of tank design, poised to respond to future global threats and challenges.
A contract with RBSL to deliver 148 Challenger 3 tanks will extend the platform’s out of service date to 2040. It will provide skilled jobs in UK industry, offer export opportunities and will support the case for the UK participation in any future international tank programmes.
The overhaul will include a new 120mm smoothbore gun which uses the most advanced globally available ammunition; a new suite of sights providing tank commanders with enhanced day and night targeting abilities; new modular armour, an active protection system and a turret that can be fitted to the tanks of allies and global partners.
As part of the Challenger 3's layered protection, the fleet will also be the first to receive the best active protection system (APS) allowing it to recognise incoming threats and neutralise them.
The tank will undergo full electromagnetic testing to ensure it is survivable in the most demanding of sensor saturated battle fields.
